Solar panels only earn their keep when light reaches the cells. Anything sitting on the glass gets in the way: road dust, pollen, bird mess, leaf litter blown off nearby trees, and moss creeping down from the ridge and along the frames.
The frustrating part is that it happens slowly. Nothing looks broken. Output just drifts down over a couple of years and most people put it down to the weather. Rain is not the answer either. It rinses the loose dust off and leaves a dark tidemark of grime along the bottom edge of each frame, which is exactly where you least want shading.
Cleaning the glass properly puts that light back where it belongs. It is a small job with a long payback, and it is one of the few bits of maintenance a solar system ever asks for.
